Last year, BIWaterCooler posted an article about how the new trend of “unplugged” charging for electronic devices might affect office furniture design and implementation. It’s a slightly different take on the topic than the one presented by Allsteel in their recent tech paper on how wireless communication devices interact with systems furniture. Currently, power and data wiring/cabling requirements impact how well workstations support technology. If you take away the need for wires and cables, you have a lot more options. Some manufacturers are already planning for this future by embedding wireless charging capabilities into worksurfaces. When technology reaches the point where not just charging but continuous power is readily available wirelessly, we might see an end to the cord and plug era at last.
